Purpose: 

You are writing this piece to explain what you think it means to be an American.  This assignment will allow you to choose meanings and define, in your own words, what characteristics make up a true American. 

Writer’s Role: 

You will be writing as yourself.

Audience:

Teacher/parents/peers

Include:

Define what you think the word “American” means. 

Three or more specific characteristics or qualities of a true American.
Two detailed examples of being American. (These could include an experience, memory, or possibly a quote.)
